Hannie Caulder (1971)
Hannie Caulder is a 1971 British Western film directed by Burt Kennedy and starring Raquel Welch, Robert Culp, and Ernest Borgnine. Kennedy called it a film “which a lot of people hate and a lot of people love. We made it for a million dollars in forty days – and it was pretty good.”
Plot:
Hannie Caulder is a pioneer’s wife living with her husband on a horse farm between towns in the American West. After a botched bank robbery, three brothers from the Clemens gang arrive at the farm. Pretending to be friendly, they kill Calder’s husband, …. her, set fire to the family home, and leave her to die in the burning house. The brothers then begin a crime spree, and Caulder recruits bounty hunter Thomas Luther Price to help her get revenge by teaching her how to shoot. They meet another bounty hunter known as Preacher.
After parting ways with him, they travel to Mexico to have gunsmith Bailey craft a specialized revolver for her, so she can become an expert marksman. Meanwhile, they become close. When the bandits surround Bailey’s house, a shootout ensues, but Hannie fails to kill the man in close combat. Price advises her to give up on revenge, but she refuses, telling him to get lost, that she only used him and doesn’t need him anymore. Price leaves, telling Hanni she’s a bad liar.
